What to Wear for Your Headshot
I’ll save you the suspense. Here is the only rule that really matters: your clothes should not fight with your face. A headshot is about you, not your shirt. Anything that pulls the eye away from your face is working against you, and against me, and against the whole point of the photo.
That is basically the entire post. But since you’re here, let me give you the practical stuff.
Clothing
Bring a few options. I mean this. The shirt you were sure about at home often looks wrong on camera, and it’s nice to have a backup hanging on the door.
Go with solid colors or very simple patterns. Dark to mid tones are easy and they let your face be the brightest thing in the frame. Skip the bold stripes, the loud logos, and the tiny busy patterns. Fine checks and pinstripes can do a weird shimmery dance on camera, so leave those at home.
Bright white can steal the light from your face. If you love a white shirt, bring a darker jacket to throw over it. That usually fixes it.
Avoid short sleeves and deep V-necks that show a lot of skin. In a tight headshot, a lot of bare shoulder or chest just becomes a big distraction.
About the Medellin weather
We are lucky. The eternal spring means you’re not fighting snow boots or a heavy coat. But Medellin can turn warm and sticky in an afternoon, so a couple of things help. Bring a small comb and, if you get shiny, a bit of powder or a blotting sheet. Shine on camera reads as oily, and no, I can’t fully “fix it in Photoshop.” The studio in Laureles has good air, so give yourself a few minutes to cool down and settle before we start.
A few quick grooming tips
- Keep skin matte. Shiny looks oily in a photo. A little powder goes a long way, men included.
- Add a touch more makeup than usual if you wear it. The camera eats some of it.
- Get a haircut about a week before, not the day of. If the cut goes sideways, you want time to recover.
- Bring your own lipstick or lip color for touch-ups.
